Health Insurance License

I started as an independent contractor for a health insurance company and do not make sense out of it license. Am I supposed to get a certificate of pre-license and then get a permit? I thought I could buy one of those books of the undergraduate studies, study for the exam, then pass the exam to get my driver's license. Please someone help me understand exactly what I'm supposed to do. I'm frustrated. How do I get the friggin license. Thank you
